Bleaching methods

Bleaching with overlay method

The patient has dental impressions made in the office. On their basis, individual, thin, transparent overlays are prepared in the laboratory. He receives them at the next visit along with a set of syringes of a whitening preparation with a concentration of 10% or 15%, depending on the sensitivity of the teeth. We try on overlays and inform him how to apply the gel. It is best to whiten at night, or wear trays for several hours during the day. Already after 2 applications the difference is visible. But the gel is usually enough for 2 weeks. Overlays serve the patient for a long time. If necessary, a preparation against postoperative hypersensitivity can be applied to them. After a year, the patient can repeat the whitening (1-2 applications are enough to maintain the effect). Preparations containing fluoride can also be applied to the overlays to prevent tooth decay. Everything, of course, after agreeing with your dentist.

Instant whitening

Before the procedure, the patient’s teeth are thoroughly cleaned. The doctor applies a light-curing gel for protection
gums. Then, with a preparation containing about 30% of hydrogen peroxide, it covers the patient’s teeth. The treatment lasts approx
40 minutes Sometimes, to achieve the desired effect, it must be repeated at the next visit.

Bleaching dead teeth

Before the procedure, the patient’s teeth are thoroughly cleaned. The doctor applies a light-curing gel for protection
gums. Then, with a preparation containing about 30% of hydrogen peroxide, it covers the patient’s teeth. The treatment lasts approx
40 minutes Sometimes, to achieve the desired effect, it must be repeated at the next visit.

In our office, we perform whitening using the immediate (in-office) method or using an overlay tray
(for night). Both methods allow you to similarly whiten your teeth by several tones. We prefer the overlay method which
it is safer and gives nicer opalescence (translucency) effects, but it requires a bit of patience
from the patient.

Patient Information

Harmfulness of the procedure

It is true that teeth whitening has been a procedure used in Poland for about 10 years, but in Western European countries, a
especially in the United States, these procedures have been performed for at least 50 years, so they are already known
probably all biological phenomena accompanying bleaching.

Whitening with the means we use from reputable companies, such as Opalescence by Ultradent,
containing carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide is not harmful, does not cause chemical changes in
tooth structure, does not weaken its resistance to caries, and does not cause inflammation of the tooth pulp.
Most of the tooth’s structural components are mineral substances – oxides, including atomic oxygen produced during the process
bleaching agent and being a bleaching agent
We do not hide the fact that not all discoloration can be removed – it is especially about discoloration after
tetracyclines taken during childhood (teeth development). We mention not to put patients at risk
for unnecessary costs.

Adverse reactions

In people with teeth sensitive to stimuli, it may take a few hours after whitening, especially with the method
immediate, i.e. with the use of high-percentage preparations, there may be a feeling of hypersensitivity, which passes
after a few more hours. Currently, we recommend patients special toothpaste 2 weeks before the procedure.
Another undesirable effect can be irritation of the gums by the whitening preparation if the patient uses too much
it will apply it to the overlay. Instead of contacting the tooth surface, the preparation flows onto the gums and accumulates
there for many hours. Such cases are extremely rare, and if they are, the burnt gums heal
in 1-2 days. It is important that you follow your doctor’s instructions exactly.

Differences between teeth whitening at the dentist’s and whitening with pastes bought in pharmacies and drugstores

Pastes contain abrasives: silica, diamond dust, soda, which polish the surface of the teeth and remove
from their sedimentary surface. If their use several times gives the patient a satisfactory effect, then it should be used
use for about a month and then switch to fluoride toothpaste. Prolonged use of these pastes may result in abrasion (ie
abrasion) of the tooth surface, which is manifested by cavities at the level of the tooth necks. In particular, people who
have exposed tooth necks, i.e. those places that are no longer protected by hard enamel must avoid toothpastes
abrasives, sold as so-called whitening. Professional whitening is about liberating simple ones
controlled chemical processes within the discolorations that have penetrated the structure of the teeth. Our teeth on
as a result of aging and “bad treatment”, they collect organic compounds from coffee, tea, wine in their micropores,
coli, red and orange juices, etc. By operating with our preparations, we cause the decomposition of complex ones
organic compounds to CO2 and H2O, i.e. chemically speaking, the process is safe and predictable, and
the color of the teeth becomes brighter.

How to proceed before the procedure?

The dentist must carefully check the condition of the fillings – they must not be leaking, as symptoms may occur
undesirable.

How to proceed after the procedure?

Staining foods and drinks should be avoided for at least 2 weeks. Places of removed discolorations
should be filled with enamel-strengthening mineral substances found in saliva or
provided by care pastes and rinses.

Are there other whitening methods?

There are methods of whitening with a laser, diode lamps, etc… these are instant whitening methods
using preparations composed in such a way that 30% hydrogen peroxide is formed during irradiation, which is
bleaching agent.

Will dead teeth whiten too?

Dead teeth are also whitened, if their discoloration results from the preparations applied to the interior, then
they require a different type of internal bleaching. Porcelain bridges, crowns and crowns will not whiten
fillings, so after whitening, it is worth replacing the fillings visible on the front with lighter ones. It is done not
sooner than 2 weeks after the end of whitening, because only after such a period of time, color and translucency
(translucency) of the teeth are fixed.
